Ceramics have been with us for thousands of years. It is often described as a significant event in human evolution.
There are clay figurines dating back 30 thousand years. The production of the first ceramic vessels began around 20 thousand years ago. To give you an idea, each archaeological discovery finds ceramic remains that help shape our ideas about most aspects of human life and history. From the era, ethnicity, trade, occupation, architectural characteristics, social complexity, technological level, gender, age, cultural activities, funerary and religious beliefs, etc. Almost every aspect of human culture and behavior can be determined by the discovery of ceramics.
Clay is the most accessible element to humans on Earth, which is why it has accompanied us throughout history. It has been our ally in the production of everyday objects and in expressive and artistic creation. But it tests us, because it requires patience, perseverance and will.
In addition to the practical benefits due to the useful objects created and also for its use as an artistic aspect, clay also offers us numerous therapeutic benefits. It is sensitive to touch, making it an ideal material for triggering tactile sensations. It also stimulates physical movement, not only of the eyes, but also of the muscles and tendons. Working with clay requires movements that stimulate nerve impulses. This activates cognitive and psychological functions. In this way, it allows the expression of emotions and has an emotionally cathartic effect.
"The same sun that melts butter hardens clay." This is an Indian proverb where the Sun is used in a metaphorical sense and can be seen as the living conditions to which we are exposed and how they influence us, making us too harsh or too permissive in the face of the circumstances we are faced with.
It is important to find a harmonious space, where we allow ourselves to understand the balance between our emotions.
In this search, we can find in ceramics a form of expression and therapy, an accomplice that accompanies us during this process.
Stirring the clay helps to: 1 Regulate emotions 2 Develop emotional resilience 3 Relieve stress and depression 4 Develop cognitive skills 5 Promote self-awareness and acceptance
It thus contributes to the balance of body and mind.
